A look at American history

1607. Virginia, the first colony, was founded.

1619. The first African slaves arrived and were forced to work on the tobacco plantations.

1620. The Mayflower landed with English Puritans on board to escape from religious persecutions.

1607-1733. The settlers founded thirteen colonies : Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

1775-1783. The War of Independence.

1776, July 4^th. With the Declaration of Independence, the thirteen colonies became the United States of America.

1787. The Federal Constitution was adopted.

1789. George Washington was elected the first president of the USA.

1803-1848. New states were purchased : Louisiana, Florida, Texas, New Mexico and California. The conquest of the West caused the Indian extermination. The frontier between the East and the West disappeared.

1848. The Gold Rush to California started.

1861-1865. The Civil War opposed the industrial North to the Agrarian pro-slavery South.

1865. Abolition of slavery all over the continent after the victory of the North.

1865, April 14^th. Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by an anti-abolitionist.

1868. The Blacks became American citizens.

1892-1924. Ellis Island was used as an immigration station with quotas to limit the number of immigrants coming from all parts of Europe.

1924. The Indians were given American nationality.

December 1941. The USA entered World War II after the attack of Pearl Harbour.

August 1945. The two Atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

1945. The Yalta agreements to organize the post-world war.

1950-1953. The Korean War.

1963. Assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

1962-1973. The Vietnam War.

1968. Assassination of Martin Luther King, a Black reverend who fought segregation.

1974. The Watergate scandal. President Richard Nixon resigned.

2001, June. fifty states and their 43^rd president, Georges W. Bush.
